Oratorical Contest

Congratulations to the students who recently placed in the TOP 15 of the Eastman Black History Month Oratorical Contest. They are Callie Eckley, Kaylie Cunningham, Joan Weddington, Ryan Bunning, Caden Cartwright, Addison Ray, Ada Hylton, Elizabeth Baker, and Keaton Dillard. Special congratulations to Ada Hylton, who received a monetary prize by placing in the TOP FIVE. Ada was also invited to present her speech on entomologist Dr. Margaret Collins at the Eastman Black History Community Event. Thank you to teacher Ms. Story in guiding these students as they participated in this annual contest.

The Eastman Black History Month Oratorical Contest provides local high school students with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of African-American contributors to the academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). It also provides students with an opportunity to improve their writing, communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. Essays submitted to the contest were required to be 3-5 pages with documented sources. The top five speeches were then graded on diction, tone, pronunciation, and creativity. Thank you to Eastman for giving our students this opportunity to expand their knowledge and to practice the valuable skills that go along with effective essay writing and oratory.
