Works Cited Guidelines

  • The Works Cited page is part of your paper.  It is considered the last page.  According to MLA, your last name and page number should be in the upper-right corner of each page.

  • The title of this page is Works Cited.   The words are centered at the top of the page.  The words Works Cited are NOT italicized, underlined, bolded, or put in quotation marks.

  • The font of a works cited page is 12 point Times New Roman or Calibri, the same as the rest of your paper.

  • Everything in your essay/project is double-spaced; the Works Cited page is no exception.
  • Works Cited pages use what is called a hanging indent.  You start the entry at the left margin, type all the way to the end of that line, and then each line after the first is indented five spaces.  Basically, all lines EXCEPT THE FIRST are indented five spaces--(in each individual entry).

  • Put all entries in alphabetical order according to the first word in the entry. Disregard the articles (a, an, the).  Whatever the first word of the entry is determines what you should use in your parenthetical citations, which is usually an author’s last name. If the entry starts with a number, place the citation where it would go if that same number were spelled out.

  • If you have two or more works by the same author, arrange them in alphabetical order by the first word that is different in the citation. Instead of repeating the author’s name, type three hyphens followed by a period.

  • You should credit everything you use for your project--even if it is paraphrased and not an exact quotation because you are still using someone else’s ideas.  You should even credit other people’s pictures.

  • MLA 9 now requires url addresses for online sources.  You no longer include http:// as part of the web address.

  • If Microsoft Word hyperlinks the website, simply click the undo button located at the top of the screen (looks like an arrow pointing back), and Word will take away the link.  You can also right click and remove the hyperlink.

  • If you use an article from the Tennessee Electronic Library or ABC-CLIO, the citations are usually created for you at the bottom of the page.
